Yamaha Dominate in Barcelona
Lorenzo Champion, Dovizioso Third
BARCELONA – Booom … Foam explosion occurred in one corner of Barcelona’s Circuit yesterday (3/6). Foam that forms tall clumps of adults with the color red and white is the new Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory) way to celebrates his victory.
Yes, after the usual celebration in the two previous victories this season, Lorenzo seemed to enjoy his victory in the MotoGP Catalan yesterday. Prior to the explosion of foam, he drove a black flag as a sign of conquest in the gravel circuit.
Yesterday was a special victory for Lorenzo. First, he had to fight very hard to take it from Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda). Second, the victory made him the more firmly at the top of the standings, winning 20 points over Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda). And last, Circuit Barcelona is located very close to his home so that there are so many supporters there yesterday.
Nevertheless, at the beginning of the race, Lorenzo was dropped to third. Start from the second position, the 2010 world champion was overtaken by Pedrosa, who started from fifth position and Ben Spies, who started from fourth position.
Pedrosa, who started the race from the fifth starting position could poke into the forefront at the beginning of the first lap in a few bend. Although Ben Spies had overtaken, he returned to lead the race after Spies had fallen on the next lap.
After that, there was a fierce duel between Pedrosa and Lorenzo. Overtaking each other several times, Lorenzo eventually sealed victory when he overtook Pedrosa on the corner La Caixa, six laps before the finish.
What is the secret of Lorenzo win his third victory in this 2012 season?
Admittedly, the patience is the key to his success that he did not make the fatal mistake.
“The situation is difficult because I do not want to do with push to limit to overtake Ben and Dani. So, I waited to get a chance,” said Lorenzo, who is now more firmly on top of the standings.
“Ben widened and I climbed into second place. For me, this is a great position, so I waited a bit to see how the Dani maintain his speed. I made a mistake and he was away, but I can get close, and in five or six laps I saw Dani speed declined slightly.
“I think to wait a little longer and see what happens, because it is very easy to fall – he braked very slow in most areas of braking, so it becomes very difficult to overtake him without crash.
“So I waited for him to make mistakes, and it happened. When I saw Dani widened, I think it’s time to chance. I pass him and I thought ‘if I was pushed to the limit to two or three laps, I could make the distance’, because Dani slightly uncomfortable. And, that’s what happened.
“The victory at Catalunya makes Lorenzo has won three of five series in 2012 season, after the Qatar and Portugal. In two other series, Lorenzo has always finished in second place. This makes him more firmly at the top with 20 points advantage over its rival from the Repsol Honda, Casey Stoner, who this time finished fourth.
Not only Yamaha rider Lorenzo played great yesterday. Yamaha Tech 3 satellite team rider Andrea Dovizioso also brilliant with a third place finish. He succeeded in forcing Stoner to finish out of three for the first time this season, which is the fourth.
Dovizioso success yesterday made him the first rider of the satellite team that could win this year. The last time it was done by Marco Simoncelli. “Beating the factory team is a wonderful result,” he told Autosport. “I am very pleased. Moreover, I am more comfortable with Yamaha,” the former Repsol Honda said.
Meanwhile, Dovizioso teammate, Cal Crutchlow, who looks good in qualifying by winning the third starting position again can not perform optimally in the race. He could only finish fifth after fighting close behind Stoner.
